Short Mat triples competition.
Sixteen teams gathered at Banham Community Centre [on Sunday 23
October] to compete in the triples tournament of the Breckland
Short Mat Bowls League. With each club in the league being allowed
to enter two triples teams there was keen competition between the
clubs to see who could take the title away from the hosts Banham
who have won for the last three years.
After the round-robin stages there were four teams left to compete
in the semi-finals - Banham, Connaught A, Hingham and Yaxham. It
turned out not to be Banham’s year as their triple of Ronnie
Dunning, Michael Seager and Garry Sutton lost by 8 shots to 4
shots in their semi against Connaught’s Keith Banks, Sheila
Bragg and Russell Hales. In the other semi it was the Hingham trio
of Rita Oliver, Brian Eaglen and Norman Oliver who overcame
Yaxham’s Doreen Paffey, Denny Cross and Russell Harris.
The final was a tight affair until the fifth end when Connaught
took five shots to find themselves 7 shots to 3 shots up with only
three ends left to play. Hingham won two of the remaining ends but
could not make up the deficit and so Connaught A won the title
with the final score being 8 shots to 5 shots. |
