| Triple triples achieved by Banham |
Once was wonderful, twice was tremendous but three
was out of this world.
Breckland Short Mat Bowls League held their annual triples
tournament at Banham Community Centre [on Sunday 10 October] and
each of the nine local clubs was allowed to enter two teams.
Sixteen triples were eventually entered for the round-robin stages
and for the third year running the two teams from the Banham club
provided both the teams that reached the final.
This year the first semi-final was won by Stan Footer, Shirley
Francis and Bill Francis who beat Watton Marie Bransby, Mike
Bransby and Terry Crockett by 12 shots to 2 shots.
In the second semi-final the Banham team of Val Footer, Julia
Blackburn and Tony Blackburn won by 12 shots to 4 shots against
the Connaught 'A' triple of John Winup, Russell Hales and Sheila
Bragg.
In a closely-fought final Tony Blackburn’s triple eventually
triumphed by 8 shots to the 7 shots of the triple skipped by Bill
Francis. Bill had needed three to draw and to take the game into
an extra end but that plan did not work with Tony electing not to
bowl his last wood and conceding 2 shots.
It will be interesting to see if this feat can be repeated for the
fourth time in 2005. |
